Matcats Crown Two Champs at Nebraska USA State


This past weekend the Kearney Matcats took 28 wrestlers to the NEUSA State Wrestling Tournament held in Grand Island. They finished in 11th place out of 226 teams and 5th out of teams with less than 30 wrestlers. The Matcats finished with 14 State Medalists.

Jude Swarm and Archer Heelan both finished as Nebraska USA State Champions. Jude finished the day 3-0 picking up a 13-second fall, followed up by a 48-second fall before picking up a 10-6 decision in the finals of the PreK/K 42-pound bracket. Archer finished 4-0 picking up a 9-2 decision, 2-1 decision, and an 8-5 decision on his way to the finals. He then picked up a 6-2 decision in the finals of the 80-pound 7th/8th-grade bracket.

Also placing for the Matcats were Jordan DeLeon (PreK/K – 39 lbs – 6th), Jaren Small (PreK/K – 40 lbs – 3rd), Keiley Mills (PreK/K – 47 lbs – 6th), Adrian Gonzalez (PreK/K – 57 lbs – 7th), Braxton Robinson (8th – 3rd/4th – 55 lbs), Carter Lawrence (5th – 3rd/4th – 55 lbs), Sawyer Schilke (5th – 3rd/4th – 95 lbs), Jordan Little (8th – 5th/6th – 65 lbs), Sam Luther (4th – 5th/6th – 70 lbs), Perry Swarm (8th – 5th/6th – 80 lbs), Gage Ferguson (7th/8th – 102 lbs – 4th), and Carter Abels (7th/8th – 132 lbs – 5th).

This was a great way to finish the 2017 season for the Kearney Matcats!
